JCJohn, born in Blackburn, was educated at St Silas’ School Blackburn, Lea County Primary School Preston and Kirkham Grammar School. He completed a Teacher Training Course at Chester and received organ lessons at the Cathedral from Mr Harold Hullah, subsequently gaining an LRAM Organ Teacher’s Diploma.

John’s first appointment was that of teacher of English and Music at William Temple School Preston. After two years at the School he became Head of the Music Department. At about the same time he moved from his first Church post at St Christopher’s Lea, to become Choirmaster at Broughton.
